NGS Research Services

AMA Deceased Physician Research
NGS has a collection of cards originally created by the American Medical Association. They provide information for physicians who died between 1906 and 1964. Most cards include date and place of birth, information about education, information about licensing and place(s) of practice and place, date and cause of death. The cards include no information about parents, spouses or children. Whenever possible we include information from published medical directories, and the 1880 Federal Census record. The fee is $15.00 and there is a $5.00 surcharge for non-members. In addition to the large database on cards that NGS was given by the American Medical Association, we have a collection of published materials relating to physicians. Because of the fragility of the AMA cards, we do not permit access by anyone other than NGS staff members. Interested persons may request searches via the Internet, by phone, by post or by e-mail.

German Immigration
NGS holds the complete collection of the published series, Germans to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports (Edited by Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby). The volumes cover the years January 1850 through to July 1893. The lookup would give the following information: ship name, port sailed from, port sailed to, date the ship arrived at a US port, name of passenger, age, sex, occupation, village from, and destination. Questions? germans@ngsgenealogy.org.

Italian Immigration
Included in the NGS reference collection is the Italians to America - Lists of Passengers Arriving at US Ports 1880-1899 series. In fulfilling search requests we may use the Ellis Island online records and the 1880 census as appropriate. The lookup will provide the ship name, port sailed from, port sailed to, date the ship arrived at a US port, name of passenger, age, sex, occupation, village from, and destination.

The National Intelligencer 1800-1850
NGS has available abstracts from The National Intelligencer (Washington, DC), 1800-1850. Marriage and death notices published in early newspapers, such as The National Intelligencer, serve a number of important genealogical purposes. For researching colonies and states that maintained vital records, newspaper notices often provide supplementary information and, sometimes, offer the initial clues in searching for ancestors. For areas that didn’t have official registration of vital statistics, newspaper notices may be the only available record of an event. The National Intelligencer, like all newspapers, did not record every birth or death for a given period. The abstracts are a fascinating account of events that happened to prominent individuals and their families, including bizarre events such as deaths resulting from disasters, early wars, duels, or epidemics. Although published in the nation’s capital, individuals included in the abstracts are from all over the country—and the world.

NGS Bible Records
The NGS Bible Record collection is being indexed and digitized. A large percentage of the Bibles, but not all, have an every name index. The index is searchable via the Internet to everyone without a fee. Images of the Bible pages are being scanned in PDF format. They are available to view online by members only. When new Bibles are indexed or scanned, they are uploaded that night, and become available on-line the next day to members. Since we are working on these almost daily, people need to check back periodically.

NGS Family Papers Collection

The new NGS Family Papers Collection targets snippets of American history from the private papers of individual families. Our primary goal is to help individuals preserve their family history by digitizing it and storing it in an accessible place. Many people today can do that themselves, while others need our help. Scanned images of these documents are being made available in a fully cataloged and searchable online database. Interested parties will be able to search for relevant names, dates, places, etc., and will see a list of matching documents. Copies of these documents will be available for a small fee. This fee is charged to defray the costs of indexing and electronic storage.
This service is temporarily on hold while the database and images are under development.

NGS Member Ancestry Charts (MACs)
The massive collection of family group sheets sent in by NGS members since the 1960s is being indexed and digitized. A full abstract of all (1,000,000+) names on every MAC, along with dates and places, has been completed for over 66,000 MACs sent in before 1995 and work is continuing on the MACs received since then. The MAC abstract is now being uploaded to the Members-Only section. Images of the MACs are being scanned into PDF format, linked to the abstract, and uploaded as well. Completing this process will take considerable time, so please check back periodically.
