The Library

The Family History Library in Salt Lake City is the largest genealogical library in the world. You will have access to more than two million rolls of microfilm (more than 142,000 square feet on five floors), hundreds of thousands of microfiche, and a huge collection of genealogical books. The library opens at 8:00 a.m. and is open until 9:00 p.m. every day, except Monday, when the library closes at 5:00 p.m., and Sundays and certain holidays, when it is closed all day.

The Trip Directors

Marie Varrelman Melchiori, CG, CGLSM, and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CG, FNGS, will lead this trip as they have in previous years. Both Marie and Shirley are experienced researchers familiar with the extensive resources available at the Family History Library™ of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City.

Marie Varrelman Melchiori, CGSM, CGLSM, is a full-time professional genealogist, specializing in records in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. She has lectured at National Genealogical Society and the Federation of Genealogical Societies National Conferences since 1988. She has lectured on military records for Samford University's IGHR and the Salt Lake Institute. She was the Assistant Director of the National Institute on Genealogical Research from 1988 to 2002. Marie continues to lecture on military records for the National Institute on Genealogical Research as well as conducting workshops on Union and Confederate records for the National Archives. She served as a Trustee for the Board for Certification of Genealogists from 2000-2006. In September of 1999 and in 2000 she was one of the Trip Directors for the NGS Research Trip to Ireland.

Shirley served two terms as NGS President and has been a Certified GenealogistSM since 1973. As a native Californian, she has experience tracing her own lines from New England and the South across the country to Northern California in the 1850s—1870s. As a professional genealogist she has compiled lineages for clients whose ancestors lived in many geographic regions. Shirley was president of the Association of Professional Genealogists from 1991—1993 and currently serves on the Boards of Association of Professional Genealogists, Board for Certification of Genealogists, and Virginia Genealogical Society.

All registrants will receive information and advice about pre-trip planning. In addition, once in Salt Lake City, each participant will have the opportunity for ongoing consultation with Marie and Shirley.
